Lit City will hold a training session for folks who desire to mentor youth Thursday, August 20 from 7pm to 8:45pm at WSFirst in room 100!
Last week Lit City ran an AMAZING basketball camp for about 40 middle school aged students in our city. Our goal is to stay connected to as many of them as possible through mentoring! We are hoping to train about 20 more mentors before September so that students who attended the summer basketball can be matched up with mentors early in the school year!
Lit City’s mentoring mission statement is “to help youth find their God-given purpose & potential through the faithful friendship of a Christian mentor”. Our desire is to mobilize followers of Christ who will commit to sharing not only the Gospel, but their very lives with students on the margins. We want to PARTNER with single parents without usurping or undermining their role. Mentoring is not “savioring”. It is a Christ-centered journey of solidarity with a young person in which both mentee AND mentor are transformed.
Many mentorship models “throw mentors into the fire” with very little training and support. Our model is geared to equip, coach, and provide accountability from the start to the finish of a mentorship. Mentors are asked to make a once a week commitment to spend time with their mentee for the duration of a year. Our dream is to see mentors continue well beyond a year but we require a minimum commitment of one year.
Please prayerfully consider taking this step towards being a light of hope for a student in our city. We have a biblical mandate to “take up the cause of the fatherless/motherless”. We are believing Jesus to raise up an army of compassionate mentors.
